MACWO Launches Operations in Kenya, Ghana and Uganda to Reach More Vulnerable Communities

MACWO is expanding into Kenya, Ghana and Uganda , bringing our community-led humanitarian programmes to new regions and reaching thousands more vulnerable mothers, children and young people.

MACWO has officially launched operations in Kenya, Ghana and Uganda, extending its humanitarian reach beyond Somalia for the first time in its history.

The expansion follows more than ten years of frontline work in Somalia, where MACWO has built a reputation for locally led, community-driven programmes in health, education, water, food security, gender equality and governance.

Speaking about the launch, a MACWO spokesperson said:

"For over a decade, MACWO has stood shoulder to shoulder with Somali communities through drought, displacement and recovery. Today, we are proud to extend that same commitment to Kenya, Ghana and Uganda — three countries with their own strengths, their own challenges, and their own incredible communities."

In Kenya, MACWO will prioritise drought response and climate resilience in the arid northern counties, delivering emergency water trucking, mobile health clinics and climate-smart agriculture support to pastoralist families.

In Uganda, MACWO will focus on refugee-hosting districts, delivering education, child protection and women's empowerment programmes for displaced families and host communities alike.

In Ghana, MACWO will work alongside local partners to strengthen community health systems, expand access to clean water and sanitation, and support women's economic empowerment through savings groups and vocational training.

In all three countries, MACWO will apply the same principles that have guided its work in Somalia: local leadership, community ownership and long-term partnership. Every programme will be designed and delivered with local organisations, authorities and communities — not for them.

The expansion is supported by MACWO's existing donors and partners, and will be phased over the coming 18 months, beginning with pilot programmes in each country before scaling up.

"We are not arriving with answers," the spokesperson added. "We are arriving with experience, with humility and with a commitment to listen. Every community we work with will shape what we do together."

MACWO remains a registered charity and continues to dedicate over 85% of institutional funds directly to field operations.
