MACWO prioritises WASH in schools and health centres, rehabilitating water systems, constructing gender-separated latrines, and installing handwashing stations that keep children healthy, girls in class, and health facilities safe for patients and staff.

MACWO delivers these WASH services directly through its field teams and local partners across Somalia. From drilling solar-powered boreholes in drought-affected villages to building latrines in schools and displacement sites, MACWO works alongside community water committees to ensure every system is maintained, managed and sustainable long after construction ends.

Governance (GV)
Mandate 05

Governance (GV)

MACWO delivers this work by embedding trained governance officers within districts and regions, working side-by-side with local authorities, traditional elders, women's groups and youth networks to strengthen the systems that serve communities. MACWO builds the capacity of local institutions through practical training in public financial management, transparency and accountability — so that Somali-led governance structures can plan, budget and deliver services that respond to real community needs. MACWO also empowers civil society and community defenders to engage duty-bearers constructively, facilitating dialogue between citizens and authorities, supporting community oversight committees, and amplifying the voices of women, youth and marginalised groups in decisions that shape their future.

  • MACWO strengthened 35 local government institutions with training in transparency and accountability
  • MACWO supported 60 community-based organisations to engage duty-bearers
  • MACWO facilitated 120 community dialogues between citizens and local authorities
Gender equality
Mandate 06

Gender equality

MACWO advances gender equality in Somalia by challenging harmful social norms, promoting women's leadership and economic empowerment, and preventing and responding to gender-based violence in all its forms.

  • MACWO guarantees women's seats on every community committee and governance body it supports
  • MACWO trained 350 women leaders in political participation, advocacy and public speaking
  • MACWO supported 280 GBV survivors with psychosocial care and economic grants

MACWO ensures that women are not just beneficiaries but leaders — placing women on village committees, local authority forums, peace dialogues and project decision-making bodies, and mentoring them to take up leadership roles in their communities. MACWO's commitment to women's leadership runs through every programme, from governance and food security to health and education.
